Swimming Pool Heat Pumps
Heat pumps use the warmth of the surrounding air to heat your pool water. Like with natural gas heaters and propane heaters, a heat pump takes in cool pool water and puts out warm pool water. Just like an air conditioner working in reverse, Heat pumps take in warm surrounding air and push it through a compressor. This increases the heat which is then sent through a condenser that adds the hot air to your pool water. Like an air conditioner (in reverse), the air leaves the pump cold.
When the weather is hot, heat pumps are a great pool heater option to heat your pool efficiently. They last a long time (20 years, vs 5 years for a gas heater), and they run on renewable energy.
If your pool or backyard doesn’t accommodate a solar cover well, a heat pump might be the next best solution for an efficient, low cost pool heater option. Just like solar covers, heat pumps work best when it’s very warm and they take time to heat an entire pool. They can seem expensive to install, but they’re very inexpensive and low cost to run. You’ll need an electricity source (220V outlet), warm weather, and time.
